So, you’ve moved to a new climate or you’re just anticipating a very cold winter. The question you might be asking yourself when those first nips and bites of cold come is, “What to wear during the winter”?
Scandinavia, London, Minnesota, and New York have extremely cold winters, but your average climate is still going to require some warming winter wear. For a few months of each year in every state of the union, there is a cold spell, and the best way to combat it is through your clothing.
If you have to go to work each day, walk in the morning cold, and trudge into an office, your suit is probably not going to be enough. A navy blue, double-breasted, wool overcoat or peacoat goes good with most colors of suits, and it will keep you warmer than just the wool in your suit would. Navy blue is the best color, and it goes with just about everything. You can wear it at night, and this will be very important if it is your only coat. A scarf and gloves should also be purchased at the same time to ensure it matches the suit. Even in some temperatures where it is not sub-zero, the dampness will make you feel like it is very cold.
A good winter outfit for extremely cold weather would include a woolen undershirt or wool first layer like a long-sleeve t-shirt, calf-length socks, and boxers all made of wool. Plus, you’ll need a medium-layer of wool like a pullover. Then, you’ll need a winter jacket like anyone would wear going skiing. A scarf and gloves are also mandatory. Boots with rubber soles for snow, ice, and rain are also a must. Your feet can’t stay cold either, though, so you’ll need to purchase some special shoes. You’ll need one pair for restaurants, and one pair for tough outdoor conditions. A pair of good cordovan boots in the city, and winter mountain boots for hiking around outdoors will suit you fine.
One of the best types of overcoats there is is a styled polo coat. It is like the normal polo coat, but it has some additions. It usually comes in cashmere, camel, or wool. It is double-breasted, full-length, big lapels sticking out, half belt, cuffs, flap breast, etc. A good coat like this can run you a couple thousand dollars, but it will last a lifetime if it’s properly cared for. Most people only need one really good coat, and this is it. It has a long lifetime.
Layering is also a critical element for any outfit you choose. One of the best ways to keep warm is dress in multiple layers. Layering insulates more. Furthermore, most of your heat is lost through your head, so you need a hat. But you don’t feel the heat lost through your head because all the blood is constantly pumping to your head to keep your brain activity going. The body can actually get much colder if the head is not covered even if you don’t feel the heat being lost.
Winter wear is fun because there are more accessories. Even though the prospect of buying a whole new wardrobe doesn’t suit most people, the items can last several years because of the materials they’re made out of. It’s a good investment.
